. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. >>> the messages inside that arena were powerful, but so is the scene outside. from santa cruz to san jose, thousands of people on the ground and even the police helicopters flying in formation. it's not often we see something like this. let's bring in kimberly tere who continues our coverage this evening from los gatos. >> reporter: raj, this is highway 17, the main corridor between santa cruz and the south bay. we saw law enforcement from the santa cruz area along with many other mourners head back over the hill about an hour and a half ago. the patrol cars had their lights on, but the highway was not shut down like it was during today's procession. the service for the two fallen police officers, lauren "butch" baker and elizabeth butler ended at about 3:00 p.m. law enforcement who showed up from across the continent lined up to pay their final respects. we saw officers from as far away as canada. the royal canadian mountain police were there along with numerous other agencies. reno and las vegas police to

is in san jose this morning. people voted for this. >> reporter: people voted for this in november. what's happening today is minimum wage workers in san jose will now make $10 an hour. that's up from $8 an hour. this is the largest minimum wage pay increase in the nation. now, again, voters approved measure d in the fall. that's why the $2 increase is happening. this is of course happy news for the thousands of minimum wage workers in the city. but san jose's mayor is concerned that some businesses might not be able to handle the hike. he is worried people could lose their jobs. >> as the minimum wage goes up, small businesses in particular will make accommodations. some will absorb the cost, some will pass it on to their customers and some will have to decrease jobs and lay people off. >> a campaign is also kicking off today to encourage people to spend their extra money from those earnings in the city. the slogan is, earn and spend in san jose. it will be displayed in business windows. the minimum wage in california is $8 an hour. in san j

at 8:45 for the public memorial in san jose. as you can see the sheriff deputies are gathering here and the motorcade is expected to be more than a mile long. a tribute to detective sergeant loran "butch" baker and elizabeth butler killed in the line of duty on february 26 by an armed suspect. the officers' flagged drape cassettes were part of a public viewing with hundreds of mourners coming to pay their respects and the officers who protected and served their community for years. >> our first time the local officers have been killed. it is tell. >> i am here to pay respects and it is good thing that people will come down here and support the local police officers. >> public viewing sites are here to view the memorial. kaiser permanente will open at 10:00 a.m. showing the service rise and parking at depot park will be freed. santa cruz fire departments will be staging their hook-and-ladder trucks along all overpasses between santa cruz and san jose. mostly on highway 17 and on highway 85. it should be a moving sight. >> cornell, thank you. the memorial service will be hell at h.p.

favro is live in south san jose at the hilltop manor senior apartments to display how this happened. marianne? >> reporter: janelle, not only did relatives and police miss the body, but on february 26 managers here investigated the apartment and also did not find stanley jacobson's body. neighbors here at the senior apartments in san jose say they're saddened to know the man known as the magician was murdered in his home. this is the woman accused of stabbing him to death, 46-year-old regina butler. neighbors describe her as his girlfriend. police say they've been investigating her on suspicious of defrauding jacobson out of insurance money. he had early stage dementia. his granddaughter reported him missing and ultimately found him in his apartment hidden beneath a pile of linens and blankets. she had been to the home three times since her grandfather had gone missing. >> based on the investigation of what we know right now, we believe he was murdered early february, probably between february 5 and the 8th. >> reporter: investigators believe the body was repeatedly missed despite t

there is is a lot of it i drove here from san jose through fremont and it was less than perfect. many white knuckle moments and speaking of san jose they have had problems. people that were waiting for a basketball game the san jose spartans were getting ready to play against the university of texas road runners. 15 minutes before the game officials called it off because of the roof leaking. right on the floor and it was going to be too dangerous. they had to cancel. and this game will not be replayed because neither team it will not impact the outcome of the playoffs. and as i mentioned, it is cold and wet. jeff bush, kron 4. >> pam: i'm here with jacqueline as she tracks the storm hitting other parts of the bay tonight. the rain should tapering off after midnight? >> jacqueline: this should taper off. it is still s showing some returns that actually could be false returns is fairly light right now. we are seeing some showers right under the radar. it has been at 4,000 ft. we cannot always see things that are lower to the ground. light over san francisco. and light rain over the peninsula and the

collecting evidence. just before 7:00 last night san jose police officers in unmarked cars tried to stop the car but the driver of the car started ramming into two police cars and a parked vehicle. the officer got out of their vehicle and that's when the suspect accelerated towards the officer. out of fear for their lives they shot the suspect and one neighbor heard all the chaos while she was eating dinner. >> we heard a car crash and she looked out the window and it was a car crash and we ran outside and we all of a sudden heard a popping sound and i guess it was gunfire. and they had all of their guns drawn and she was telling everybody, go inside, go inside. to san jose. we are in san grows -- we start with claudine in santa cruz. >> reporter: we are standing at the start of the procession. the folks told to gather here starting about seven this morning and in the last several minutes we have seen activity. take a look to the side of me. you can see three buses that are lined up along this street. they have the santa cruz police emblem on them and a sign. we assume possibly members of the department will ride these buses down the procession. i want to show you what's happening in this parking lot just near the boardwalk here. you can see motor officers starting to line up their motorcycles. they will stage there and then move to the start of the procession. this procession, ready to leave about 8:45 but everybody was told to gather about seven this morning so it'll just get busier. the morning has started in this community. everybody is still trying to dumb to terms with the loss of the two officers. there was a memorial last night at the santa cruz memorial funeral home. just a chance for people, friends, family, strangers to come. there

to highway 87 and finally here, downtown san jose. along the route, other agencies and ordinary citizens stopped to pay tribute. tim shea made it a point to step up on the rail of the highway 17 overpass to hold up a sign honoring the only two santa cruz police officers to ever be killed in the line of duty. >> i'm just a regular guy trying to do something, you know? i do this kind of stuff because it makes me sleep better at night, regular guy, standing on the bridge, giving them a salute. >> reporter: how are the families doing? >> you know, they're doing incredibly well given the circumstances. they're on an emotional roller coaster right now. but for us, all we can do is surround them with love, caring and support and show them that by how we honor them today in this memorial service. but then again, how we honor their legacy in how we behave and how we conduct ourselves with the community in the future. >> reporter: as you're looking down autumn street in front of the hp pavilion, you get a sense of just how many people from law enforcement are here. they're not just from santa cruz
